"LOW DOWN WHERE THE SNAKES CRAWL" iTUNES REVIEW                                  ~ Michael G. Nastos, All Music Guide

Vocalist/songwriter Christina "Cee Cee" James has gone through no small amount of tragedy in her well-documented personal life, but that does not detract from the positive vision and Pacific-Northwest-to-California-and-back perspective she brings to her down-home blues approach. This is her second studio CD, but the one that should bring national attention to a very alluring, substantial, and enjoyable singer rooted in voodoo, mystical, underground-styled blues, with only a minute trace of rock or funk. She has perfect control of her great voice, not strained or restrained on any level. There is a darker side to her tunes, established by the title track that strikes a balance between the acoustic rural and siren shadow world image that is difficult to resist. She's even a bit whimsical, as heard on "I'll Ask the Questions, You Tell the Lies" in a shuffle beat with her overdubbed vocals. Contrasting the low-down "Black Raven" with "Love Makes Change" à la Koko Taylor's version of Willie Dixon's "Wang Dang Doodle," it's clear that James has done her homework on a broad spectrum of Memphis-to-Chicago blues. There are many elongated songs, atypical of the blues, but indicative of James' intent to showcase her husband, guitarist and co-songwriter Rob Andrews. He's a fabulous slide player whose identity on this recording is fully in tune with the understated voice of James, and enhances a mystery quotient a hundredfold. You should really enjoy this fine CD, and also seek out her debut recording, the pop/funk-oriented "Spiritually Wet," or the more intense live album "Seriously Raw" for further evidence of why Cee Cee James is one of the very best newer blues singers, on tap for superstardom along with Ana Popovic, Janiva Magness, and E.G. Kight.

"SERIOUSLY RAW"

~ Roy Brown - Washington Blues Society

Outside of Portland, several decades ago, a little girl that her mother called Christina took mom’s hand on the way to Sunday services.  She was thrilled by the voices, the passion that came with voices; Christina was driven by something deep inside and had to join in.  She never strayed far from those voices.  As time passed, one voice emerged.  Singing her passion became the life journey of Cee Cee James.  She is not only one of us, she is one of ours, spending her days in the small northwest village of Langley, on Whidbey Island while spilling her guts for the northwest blues scene, night after night.

Dropping her childhood name, and coming off a huge success of the first blues genre album, Low Down Where The Snakes Crawl, her second blues CD was recorded last fall at the Sunbanks Rhythm and Blues Festival.  Soon to be released is Seriously Raw, Live at Sunbanks.  While “Snakes” was a bit of a concept album and musically went in multiple directions, the upcoming release is an outdoor, pure party buffet of blues, blues / rock, and with just a sprinkling of straight ahead rock and roll (check out her version of Tina Turner’s “Nutbush City Limits”), as arranged Cee Cee James style.

The record starts out pure blues covering “Crossroads”, the likes of which you won’t believe if you are thinking Robert Johnson.  If he could hear this version today, a smile would come over his face.  Next comes “I Ain’t Superstitious”, again nothing like Willie Dixon, but more traditional than Crossroads.  Cee Cee’s writing is showcased in the next three tunes, penned for the former and the upcoming studio album slated for a fall release.  Crowd response says it all when you’re talkin’ music that touches the soul.  Comparisons to Janis Joplin will never stop.  Instead of fignting it, Cee Cee embraces it with a Janis tribute on the next two cuts,“Mercedes Benz” and “Bobby McGee”.  My very favorite Cee Cee James cover is Luther Allison’s “House of the Blues”.  It’s on this record, and it is well worth the price of admission just to have this song.

Cee Cee is backed on this record by the one and only Chris Leighton on drums with Dan Mohler on bass and “Slide Boy” Rob Andrews on slide and rhythm guitar.  This combination makes up one of the tightest rhythm sections in blues music.  On lead guitar Jason Childs is not a screaming, mind numbing player, but one who produces an intricacy of notes and chords, and an intimacy of feel that turns your head in his direction when he takes a solo.

Cee Cee James is a near term future national talent, and she is breaking out right now.   Seriously Raw is a five star record.

KLAMATH BLUES FESTIVAL - LIVE PERFORMANCE REVIEW
Rita Ashley - Seattle Executive Careers Examiner

The real treat of the afternoon was Cee Cee James, a Seattle area blues performer. Her band is ideal for her voice and style and her performance, electrifying.  She is one of the few women blues performers who appears to be genuine; the real deal.  On some tunes she channeled Janis Joplin; a fact not missed by the DJ who asked her to treat us with the first stanza of “Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz...” perfectly.  If you have any blues in you at all, seek out Cee Cee James.  I have been listening to her CD, ‘Low Down Where the Snakes Crawl’ and love every cut. The fidelity is super.  Her band is balanced and sharp.  Buy the CD and thrill your neighbors when you play it way too loud, as I am right now.

THIS GIRL’S REALLY GOT IT!
Kentuckiana Blues Society - Les Reynolds

Cee Cee's latest CD is a testament to her past, her link with the blues and her rock-solid spirituality. The 11 tunes mix roots, blues, rock, funk and even something that could be called "spiritual folk." Husband Rob Andrews lends his warm, fat electric slide guitar to the mix on several occasions; however, it is Cee Cee's emotion-drenched, soulful, sometimes gritty voice that accentuates every ache, every cry, laugh and growl in every tune. Comparisons to Janis aside, her voice is what anchors this CD. For someone hidden away, a 'best-kept secret of the NW' you might say, this artist has all the earmarks of a talent just waiting to burst onto the national scene. This girl's really "got it." And you should get it... the CD that is.

THIS GAL CAN SING THE BLUES!
Peter “Blewzzman” Lauro - Blues Editor @Mary4Music.com

Some of you may know of her as Cee Cee James, some of you may know of her as Christina James - her real name, and some of you may know of her as "The Funky White Girl" - the nickname associated with her as a result of an earlier R&B release. On the other hand, some of you may not know of her at all, and if that's the case, you need to change that because this gal can sing the blues. Here we are with pretty much half the year still ahead of us, and I'm thinking I may have just listened to the 2009 Blewzzy Award winning disc. That translates to this - you've got to go to www.ceeceejames.com and pick up a copy. Trust me when I say it - once you listen, you'll have discovered the woman that the blues world will soon be marveling over. For full review visit:

AN EXCELLENT RECORD
Phoenix Blues Society- Kyle Deibler, President

LOW DOWN WHERE THE SNAKES CRAWL has been one of the more interesting records I’ve had a chance to listen to so far this year. Cee Cee James writes songs from a place of emotional honesty that few artists care to reveal. The result is an intimate, sometimes guttural view of a woman who isn’t afraid to face her demons and work out her life’s lessons. From that perspective, “I’ll Ask the Questions" and “Watermelon Lucy” seem oddly out of place to me. Perhaps one of these days I’ll cross paths with Cee Cee and she can explain those tunes to me. But this is definitely an excellent record from a female artist who isn’t afraid to bear her soul. I applaud her for that. And I encourage you to look her up, you can find out more about Cee Cee on her website.

WHY ISN’T SHE AT LEAST A GRAMMY AWARD NOMINEE ALREADY?
WA Blues Society - Blues Interview - Robert Horn

Some have come up to Cee Cee after a live performance and told her that she is channeling the spirit of Janis Joplin.  Perhaps that is true but it underestimates what is going on inside of her.  She has a lot of substance and her own style of song-writing that is more than words can explain.  I will try to do the impossible here.  I will try to explain (with words) who Cee Cee James is.  You will understand more if you go hear her and get her most recent CD “LOW DOWN WHERE THE SNAKES CRAWL.”

A GREAT COLLECTION OF SONGS.
Illinois Blues Blast - Michael Packer, Windmill Music

I liked the guitar intro on the title cut “Low Down Where The Snakes Crawl,” and yes, Cee Cee James does sound like Janis Joplin sometimes on this track. “Black Raven” is a cool track with some nice harmonica by Michael Wilde. I especially like 'Love Makes Change'. It has a catchy hook and is a very contemporary song. 'Desert Blues' with a Bo Didley beat is also quite good. 'Roll Me Over' has an American Indian feel to it and the spiritual lyrics to 'Make It To The Other Side' are also interesting.

'I'll Ask The Questions, You Tell The Lies' is a fun novelty song that I think will get radio airplay. 'White Picket Fence' and the sexy, 'Watermelon Lucy' are songs geared to the rock genre but the feeling Cee Cee James puts into 'Done Love Wrong' showed me she has the blues and it comes from her soul. 'Spirit Of Shaman' is another American Indian inspired song.

I could make comparisons to Janis Joplin in Cee Cee’s voice but when I listened to the CD I got to know her more. She has her own voice. It can be smooth, earthy, sexy and downright soulful plus she has a great collection of songs.

I also enjoyed her band. I can tell they are seasoned veterans. The most important thing to me is I like ‘the sound of this CD.’ It has particular sound from beginning to the end. I listen to a lot of CD’s from artists who are all over the place musically. In my opinion Cee Cee and her band have created their own sound.

Blues traditionalists won't like this CD. There are no shuffles or Stormy Monday's. This is a blues-rock album, recorded and performed well by a lady who has a passion for her music!

CREAM OF THE CROP!
Roy Brown - WA Blues Society Bluesletter

I don’t do a lot of reviews.  I don’t like panning an artist’s effort, because even if the result is sub par, it’s hard work and expensive.  So it was with trepidation that I cracked open the new Cee Cee James CD, “Low Down Where The Snakes Crawl.”  I have seen Cee Cee live several times and she is a great performer.  Joining Cee Cee on this disc are Rob Andrews on rhythm and slide guitar, David Malony on drums, Dan Mohler on bass, James Howard on lead guitar, and Cee Cee James on vocals.  Guests include Michael Wilde on harp on “Black Raven.”  This appears to be a concept album which strays only in a couple of cuts.  If an artist’s writing is a window to the soul, I learned a lot abut Cee Cee James with careful listening.  To me, the record is about self evaluation and its relationship to your own chosen spirituality.  The lyrics showcase very professional writing talent and they run deep with obvious sincerity and beautiful juxtaposition.  The lyrics are set to music that is sometimes slow and deeply moving, while at other times light and funny.  The title track grabs  you right away with the haunting sounds of the band and the track’s perfect lyrics.  “Low Down Where the Snakes Crawl” draws you into the entire CD.  Cee Cee’s vocal style has many things in common with Janis Joplin, but that is where the comparison ends.  While Janis was one of my all time favorites, but Cee Cee goes in many more directions than did Janis in her short life.  Janis didn’t write that many songs, but Cee Cee wrote all of the tracks on her latest CD.  There is only one CD produced this year that made my “cream of the crop” list so far.  Now there are two.  If you want to find a CD that will listen to for a long time, long time, pick up “Low Down Where The Snakes Crawl” by Cee Cee James and her band.

EVEN JOPLIN WOULD HAVE APPLAUDED
Blues Lovers United San Diego - Michael Kinsman, President

Ok, stop me if you've heard the one about the female blues singer who sings just like Janis Joplin.  We've heard them, women who think they can growl and shout just like Joplin.  Unfortunately, they almost always are inferior to the real thing.  But here comes Cee Cee James getting constant comparisons with Janis and looking good.  Her new CD sounds like something Joplin should have recorded, but it's not about shouting and growling.  Cee Cee chooses to take on the subtler side of Joplin's vocal style.  She purrs and sings with a soft, controlled approach.  Cee Cee wins credit for producing a CD that even Joplin would have applauded.

BOLD, IMPASSIONATE VOICE
Cascade Blues Assoc - Blues Notes - Greg Johnson, President

"Listening to "Low Down Where The Snakes Crawl" will certainly keep you riveted to the soaring intense vocals of Cee Cee James.  Obvious comparisons with Janis Joplin or maybe former Stone The Crows' Blues-Rock vocalist Maggie Bell will pop right to mind. But leave the comparisons behind . Cee Cee delivers her own unique grit and sass with her bold, impassionate voice that she needs to be reminded of nobody but herself."  Read Full Review

THE VOCALS ON THESE TRACKS ARE OUTSTANDING
“Taxi Reviews... and Interviews

The vocals on these tracks are outstanding, Christina. The voice wraps around the rhythms with precision and force. The grooves are determined and move through the tracks with a solid form that still allows some flexibility to come in for contrast. The riffs are tasty and work with the vocals well, coming in as a playful as a kitten, adding tons of flourish.

Q: Where did you grow up?
A: I was Born in Portland, OR. However, the majority of my growing up years were in California.

Q: What made you realize that music was your path?
A: A continual nagging desire since childhood to perform from the gut of myself, which I experimented with in acting and modeling, but always dabbling in music because of my writing and singing abilities. I found that in music, I could be the total of who I was and not have to fit into some mold that a photographer or a director required. This was the freedom to write from the core of my life experiences and give of them with voice and performance.

Q: How would you describe the music that you typically  create?
A: Life heavy lyrics laid into rhythmic blues rooted rock and soul.

Q: Who are your biggest musical influences?
A: Prince, Chaka Khan, Bill Withers, Big Mamma Thorton, Luther Allison, Howlin’ Wolf, Mavis Staples, Old style Tina Turner. Basically anything real, raw, and sweaty from the gut.

Q: What makes your music unique?
A: The raw and real vocal feel and the depth of the lyric content.

Q: Has there been one particular moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of?
A: Well there are many but the ones that stick out as ‘the one’ time after time is each time a fan comes up after a show, or a fan writes after listening to our music and tells me how much it has touched their heart, and/or moved their soul. Those moments are really what keeps me goin’ beyond all else.

Q: What's next for you?
A: Continuing to write, record, and tour extensively in the U.S. and Europe.

SUPERIOR STAGE APPEAL
‘Who Let The Girls Out’ Live Review - Roy Brown

She appears to be loved by some, panned by others, and regardless of the vocal mega talent, has never been recognized by the right people.  As her set continued, the vocal talent and stage presence became obvious.  Her version of  Red House combined great music and lyrics with gutsy, raw vocals and superior stage appeal.  This woman is a riveting performer, primarily in the rock and R & B genres.  If you like this type of music, I highly recommend taking in one of her shows.  Read Full Review

FUNKYWHITEGIRL BLEND OF JANIS JOPLIN & ARETHA FRANKLIN
Tippy Canoe Live Performance Review - Positively Entertainment

This writer was lucky enough to visit The Tippy Canoe recently when Cee Cee James was rocking down the house. James is a delightful recent import from San Diego. She is a funky white girl blend of Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin, and can really belt out a song, forcing you onto the dance floor in a joyous musical celebration. Her rendition of Bobby McGee, Mercedes Benz and Piece Of My Heart; for you Janis Joplin lovers, is an absolute must. This writer loves Janis Joplin’s music and James really brings it home. James was born in Portland, left when she was five years old and has won musical acclaim and honors, prior to her recent tragic loss of her husband and return to her roots here in Portland.

TWENTY QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS WITH CEE CEE JAMES
Front Porch - San Diego Troubadour

Q: What Does the Blues Mean to You?
A: The ummm humm and the uh huhs of life, in music. Again, it's the soul, the gut, the raw, the real, the basic, but very deep feel of it all. And it don't matter what the lyrics are - what matters is how it feels. The blues is about feel, pure and simple.

IF THE SOUL OF MUSIC NEEDED A VOICE
San Diego Music Matters

If the soul of blues music needed a voice it would sing like Cee Cee James. If blues music needed a sultry mama with a kickin band to rock the blues, then look no further than the Cee Cee James Band. This band breathes the rock into roadhouse blues, carving themselves a promising niche in the SD blues scene.

Miss James is not a virgin to the local blues scene having started her career in music over 20 years ago. A wide range of influences from gospel to heavy metal have followed this musical rolling stone as she traveled around the country performing as her alter ego, Christina Fasano while making a name for herself in the 'funk scene' as the 'funkywhitegirl'. Finally deciding to combine these elements and go back to her roots, she transformed into Cee Cee James, formed a band comprised of genius musical minds and began doing what she was born to do, sing dem blues! For a band that is deep in tradition and still able to rock you into the next century, check out the Cee Cee James Band.

DRENCHED AND DRAINED
Stu Winkleman - LA Session Guitarist

Cee Cee James delivers the punch of a two-ton truck dropped from the balcony...right onto your head. Her vocals are without a doubt some of the most gut-wrenching, hard-driving sounds to ever grace the blues. If she doesn't raise the hair on your arms, you ain't listening!

Cee cee James doesn't produce blues that you talk over or take lightly. She sings with a drive and delivery that makes you sit up and take notice. And when she is done, you may just be as drenched and drained as she is. Wow, don't miss a chance to see her wail. It is really something special!

YOU’RE ON THE RIGHT TRACK BABY!
Bill Nolan - WPKN-FM WPKM-FM - Voice of "Antique Blues"
89.5 & 88.7 Bridgeport, CT / Montauk, NY

I'm in command of your two track teaser from your upcoming CD, and both songs are mighty fine tunes with track one coming out on top, as far as listener response goes. I have to admit, track one , "I Done Love Wrong," is an excellent piece of work. Do I hear a little bit of Janis Joplin,or Big Mama Thornton, who may have been your influences? Really looking forward to the full CD of your wonderful seething & sensuous vocal treatments of the blues genre. You're on the right track baby!!

Gushing Fans

I have to start this by saying that I'm a terrible snob and a purist when it comes to serious music. I find Norah Jones hollow and unconvincing. Big Mama Thornton, on the other hand, is the real deal. And so are you. Damn, girl, I was blown away by your voice on the radio, and had to come directly home and find your CD. - Melody Murray - Oregon

This is the biggest compliment that can be paid to a Blues Singer - the first time I heard you I thought you were the reincarnation of Janis Joplin, only better, incredible!!!!!!  You are the epitome of Blues.   Garnie Ross - Canada

To Mark Groshong:
I want to thank you, and the Klamath Blues Society for sending Cee Cee James to Memphis.  There is certainly a  lot of amazing talent in the Northwest Blues scene, and I know it can be a daunting task to judge between the artists and performers from one year to the next.  But when I first heard Cee Cee James at the Hwy 99 Blues Club in January of this year, I was an instant believer.  Cee Cee is such a pleasure to watch & to listen to, and I believe that she does more than sing and perform.  I believe that she can stir up renewed passions for Blues Music in folks that happen to cross her path. So in that way she is also a Great Blues Ambassador for all the artists and musicians that call the Blues genre their home. Your nomination of Cee Cee to the challenge in Memphis is not a surprise to me, and I'm pleased and proud to know that there are so many others that feel the way I do. All I can say is Amen and Go Cee Cee! Given the chance, I believe that Cee Cee is someone who can make an explosive impact in Memphis and nationally.  All she needs is a stage, her great band, and her vocals and passion for Blues music will do the rest.
Ron Beatteay - www.sweetbluesnw.com

I just lost my mind when I heard you sing....You got it all baby...voice, body, personality and OH THOSE PIPES!!  I just Love you girl.
Deanie Hennessy - Huntington Beach, CA

Hi Cee Cee, it is so great to hear how well you are doing. We miss you so much out here in El Cajon. The Downtown Cafe just ain't the same without you. Good luck in the competition for the Nashville trip. I will put out some good karma and say a little prayer for you and the boys. Just to let you know, I emailed Peter Noble, the producer/director of the Blues Festival in Byrons Bay Australia and basically told him "to do himself a favor and go to your website and listen."  I also told him I felt you were much more than just a songwriter and singer.  I honestly do think that we are all better people having crossed paths with you somewhere on our journey. You are so "real" and give so much of yourself in every performance. Bottom line, I told him he was nuts if he didn't invite you to his blues festival. I hope it helps.
Leila Sinclair - Your El Cajon CA fan for life !!!!!

Come back to Southern Oregon.  You were great, one of the best shows I've seen.  From the water guy at Roscoe's.
Bruce Stanbridge, Phoenix, OR

Hey there CeeCee, just wanted to say thanks again you are amazing and we wish you all the best and we hope to see you again soon.  I've had so many people ask when you'll be back and the response has been fantastic.  People will flock to you when you come back.  Good luck with the Australia gig and if you send me the link I will post a comment as a club owner who hired you. With luv and hugs - Nikola AKA Mrs. Roscoe Roscoe’s BBQ, Phoenix, OR

Cee Cee,  I saw you at Roscoe's in Medford, Oregon and you totally rocked!  I thought you and the guys were an unbelievably talented band for such a small venue, but that's part of what made it so much fun.  I was there with my sister, who is recovering from breast cancer, and I was up visiting from Southern Calif.  Would love to hear if you make it back down to San Diego, would bring all my So Cal friends... My hubby loved your CD.
Shevaun Triolo - San Diego, CA

Yes, you really tore it up. I brought a friend to his first Blues Society mtg. (he is a jazz trombonist) and he really thought your set was remarkable (and I would heartily second that). I am a bit amazed that it has taken me so long to see you live as I've heard about you for some time. I go to a few shows as music is a passion with me. I am enjoying your CD that I picked up at the Central and am trying to give it some air time with my friends. (I am a big proponent of supporting your favorite musicians.)  A gentleman did come say hello to me - (that must have been Rob - sorry kinda' bad with names at times...). He was the guitarist seated. I think he is a great slide player and picker and would love for you to tell him so for me. The only thing I regretted about your show was that it was TOO short. Take care and keep on singing from the heart. (Anyone who can't feel the emotion you put in your music is either highly inebriated or not paying attention.)
Weldon Follis - Seattle, WA

I got your cd yesterday and put it straight into the player.  First -- thanks for sending it.  You have a lot to be proud of!  I know you've had more than your share of reasons to sing the blues the last few years; this CD stands as a testament to your perseverance and strength.   I love that you've taken the tonal quality straight-shot of J.J. you possess and concocted it into your own CeeCee on the rocks with a twist.  Smooth when it needs to be, rough when it needs to be, with the talent and timing to know what goes where.  I'm proud of you!!  Thanks again for gracing me with your music, as well as your friendship. Love,
Beverly Howell - Austin, TX

You are fabulous and we loved every minute of your concert. I sincerely wished you lived in San Diego because I think we would be at all your performances. You are that good! You should be at the top of the charts! I hope and pray that you will be soon. Your songs are so good. It is a rare person who can perform beautifully and write their own songs too. Elizabeth was not kidding when she told me how good you were.

I have to tell you that my very best girlfriend lost her husband to cancer last Friday. He was only 50 years old. I was with her for many days during his illness, and she always said that he called her his "Angel", especially towards the end. She stayed the night with us last night, & this morning we were going through my CD's to see if I had anything she might want to play at his memorial service.....I guess you may already know what I'm going to say......we cried together as we listened to your "He called me Angel" CD....It blew her away.....you've touched another life in ways you'll never know.
